“Garbage Return or Declare War!”- Pronouncement of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte

No need of war but the matter will be resolved on the soonest possible time!

The Canadian Government has made the offer to quickly repatriate the waste and waiting from Philippine Government to response said by Canada’s Global Affairs Spokesperson Adam Austen. The spokesperson is talking of 2,500 tons (103 containers) came from the port of Vancouver that contained household trash. It is nearly six-years from 2013 and 2014 since the Canadian garbage has been seized by the Philippine Port Authorities. The report said that only 1/3 of the containers are recyclable.

With recent update showed a positive response from Canadian Government to return the garbage from the port of origin but the details of process are still not finalized from both parties. There are many lingering issues that cause a delay on the process of repatriation. Some of the issues are pointed-out by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his visit to Philippines last 2015 and 2017:

  1. Canada has no legal way to force the Canadian Company to deal with trash.
  2. Theoretically possible for Canada to do something.
  3. Main disagreement is on the payment of garbage repatriation as pointed-out by the working group who are overseeing the issue.

There are many lobbying groups said that Canada violated the multiple guidelines of Basel Convention signed and ratified on 1992. The convention states that countries are not allowed to ship any hazardous waste to any developing countries without consent.

Dear Bestfriend JPs and OFWs around the world, if you can remember President Rodrigo Duterte of Philippines announced last 23rd of April 2019 during the news conference in Pampanga, Philippines that he will declare a war against Canada if the later will not act over the hundred tons garbage impound at the port area near Manila. The deadline was given until 15th of May 2019 to ship-out the garbage from Philippine territories as stressed by Secretary Teodoro Locsin from Department of Foreign Affairs.
