At the age of 10 he won the children’s division of Utah Talent Competition, at the age of 12 he became the Junior Vocal Champion of Star Search 2. After Star Search competition, he had partial vocal paralysis but declined to undergo surgery. He almost gave up his singing career but in the year 2007 when he was sixteen years old, he tried to audition in American Idol Season 7 held at San Diego, California. At the end of the competition on May 21, 2008, he became runner up of David Cook.
