As an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), you must obtain OEC Exemption before leaving the Philippines whether you are newly hired worker or vacationing/returning worker.

Here are the steps on how to acquire Balik Manggawa online thru http://www.bmonline.ph/

1) If you are first timer user, fill the required information on the new user section. Click I’m not a robot, click I Accept The Terms of Service and click the red button Sign Me Up.

2) After signing, the system will send confirmation link on your registered email address and click the link to verify your identity.

3) Log on to http://www.bmonline.ph/ under Already Registered Section. Enter your recent OEC Number and the system will search your record. If your profile is not available on the system, then you need to make an online appointment and select the nearest POEA Office in the Philippines or the nearest POLO Office in your current country of residence.

4) If your record is available then you need to upload your recent photo, edit your personal data, contract particulars and legal beneficiaries/qualified dependents.

5) Click the green button on your right side to Acquire OEC or Exemption. Thanks to President Duterte, OEC is now absolutely free.

6) Pop up will ask your expected flight schedule. The expected flight schedule is the date when you will depart Philippines back to your employer abroad.

7) Another pop up will ask if you are returning to the same EMPLOYER and JOBSITE. If your answer is no, then you need to set appointment to update your new employer to the nearest POEA/POLO Office.

8) If your answer is yes, pop up will ask confirmation and finally click Acquire Exemption button.

9) Congratulations, now you are exempted from securing OEC. To save mother earth, take a screenshot of your OEC from your mobile phone and it is not required to print. On the day of your flight just present the screenshot to the airline counter staff and immigration officer.

Please be noted that this service is only applicable to Overseas Filipino Workers. If you are leaving Philippines as a tourist, you must pay Terminal Fee of P550.00 and Airport Tax of P1,620.00. The Terminal Fee of P550.00 is reimbursable for OFW and you may claim directly to your airline at the airport. If you are reimbursing thru Emirates Airline, kindly ensure that you bring photocopy of your passport and residence visa. Otherwise, photocopying service at the airport is expensive.

Based on the current trend on the family of Filipino Overseas Workers (OFW), the popular family set-up is rapidly changing. The image of father and mother is alternatively set aside to sustain their livelihood especially for those who choose to work abroad. Is it alarming to recognize this changing family set-up, or this is now the trend of a modern family lifestyle?

This set-up is the same also with countries such as US who deploys soldiers around the world who left their family for the sake of duty and work outside their country, some families failed to see them for a period of 6 months, but some become handicapped or dead when they arrived. Those pilots who left their family for different airlines suffered the same also. Most businessmen who are frequent travelers experience the same fate of not seeing their families for 2 or 3 months due to different meetings around the world. Every society now has different reasons for working overseas that’s why alternative family set-up is becoming widespread.

(Photo Credit: Illustration of modern family set-up)

What is alternative family set-up, this is the set-up where wife plays the dual roles as mother and father or vice versa in the case of the husband during the absence of the other one for a period of month or years. If the wife is the one who left-out with their kids so she assumed the roles of a father. She takes care of monthly remittances, daily budget and physical aspect of the house plus the psychological support of their growing children including attitude and behavioral discipline. This is the same with the husband during the absence of the wife. But with the help of internet, this alleviates dynamism to the set-up of family but still missing the physical presence.

(Photo Credit: Family support in Australia with Bubbly Maxine, Alex and Jeng Icao)

Let’s focus on the Filipino Overseas Workers to assist them with this trend of alternative family set-up to provide more significance and importance to their family members who are abroad. These are the tips that will guide them on how to cope with their situations for both husband and wife:

  1. Develop trust to one another, stop being erratic on you approach to your wife or husband not to create the presence of doubt. If there is a doubt already, dissect it then resolve the problem. If cannot be resolved, then part ways peacefully. Stop being a character on a tabloid magazine or a soap opera where you need to kill one another. Both of you are young who deserve to live then concentrate on your work then live peacefully.
  2. Budget the monthly remittances, plan your monthly meal and expenses outside the house. Don’t be showy to others that you have different gadgets or different appliances, being simple is good enough to be appreciated.
  3. Constant communication, it is not always a problem that you need to tell your partner every time you call him/her, but you can communicate by sharing the happiness, achievements and positive attributes to one another.
  4. Create a harmonious relationship with your partners and kids, don’t create the image of fear to your children by depicting the other one as a monster and you are the angel. This will create division on the mind of the children where it is hard for them to open-up of their feelings and emotions.
  5. Stop competing with your partners, his or her achievements should be celebrated not to be envious about. You are both different individuals with different set of talents so naturally you have strength and weakness on different areas, it just a matter on how to cultivate your weakness to make it as your powerful weapon.
  6. Cultivate relationship with your immediate family, in-laws, relatives and friends. These are the people who can help you during the absence of your partner. This people will be there in times of need. Don’t fight with them as they are not your enemy. They will provide tips and reminders but collect only the useful one. There are tendencies that these family members share gossips and dramas so ignore these then stay positive.
  7. Set-up limits on financial help, not everyone needs money, but they maybe need your time so provide only your time. If a family member really needs financial help, include them to your budget then discuss it with your partner so that you can include them on your monthly expenses.

These are some of the tips on how you cope with the trend of alternative family set-up. I am an OFW also who suffers the same as yours. My life is not perfect, but I am making it as meaningful as possible. I am using the different facets of my talent not to waste time but to contribute a little ripple to share my experiences to our society.

One of our readers from Gulf shared her experienced about “WASTA”. The views and opinions expressed in the following article does not necessarily reflect the policies and position of Jericho’s Place. The story was shared for the lesson learned gain on her story. Please share your comments and feedback about the below article:

I don’t want to write something about “wasta” because I don’t know really the meaning or if it has really a significance entity attached to the word. But I become curious as I always hear the word “wasta”. What is really the meaning of “wasta”?

I google the word “wasta” if it really exists then I found the word from Wikipedia, it is an Arabic word that loosely translate to nepotism, clout or ‘who you know’. It refers to using one’s connections and/or influence to get things done, including government transactions such as the quick renewal of a passport, waiving of traffic fines, and getting hired for or promoted in a job.

I first encountered the word “wasta” when one of our superintendents suddenly disappeared on site without any permission, he disappeared for one day…on second day…then on third day until the report came to our attention. I called the person to know his explanation on why he always disappeared on site, he said that he took a driving lesson on the day I called him but luckily, he passed the driving test (it means we are late but anyway).

He was saying an apology not to repeat again though it has a repercussion in terms of company policy not only an apology. I asked him “how did you get a license where you only have a skilled labor visa?” He answered me by saying through “WASTA”. He said that there is a Banga__ (a local term refers to a person belong to Asian nationality) helped him where he paid USD 3,950.00 and who referred him to someone at the licensing office where he got a schedule for a driving test (so it means wasta works because he got the license).

Then I continue inquiring on how it works with others, one of my respondents said that she got her visa from her wasta by paying USD 1,975.00 for two (2) years not a kadama or domestic helper visa but a work visa. I asked her how it works, she said that somebody from salon referred her to a Mas__ (refer to a person with Arabic decent) who accompanied her near to the Visa Office where the visa was processed.

The word “wasta” is a term refers to a favor being asked or being given in exchange of money or simply connection deviating to the actual policy, it is a family term of “padrino” that works in the Philippine and “mafia” of Italy (now I am looking for its cousin and uncle…!!!).

The term “wasta” is embedded to the culture and not only to the mouth but reaching to the stomach of individuals – it means every country has a bad tomato!  It is like a skin that has lesion that requires surgery or operation, but the scar still there.

Our advice to our dear readers, always get the lesson learned from the story…

One of our readers shared his life undergoing depression while working in Gulf, Jericho’s Place want to share this article for the lesson learned gain on his story:

I woke-up one day that I am alone- no family, no friends and no life. The struggle is real that goes to my mind up to my depression. I am alone I said to myself. Every night I cried to deepest sense of my soul while remembering the many good things I have in my life.

Gulf is a country of bitter-sweet place, bitter as you are separated with your family, working and dreaming alone. Sweet because you enjoy independence in a foreign land where you meet different kind of people and cultures.

In this region of Doha, I found a very supporting friend where she never leaves you, has no complain of whatever you do. She gives life in every moment. When you are alone, she is there to kiss but never to hug. I don’t know why she is like that, she always kisses me every time I need her. She is not romantic nor playful but persuading and manipulator…I can’t understand her!

I miss her when I am sick because I have no energy to lift my hand. She is so silent but enduring, I know she hates me during this period. But whenever I recover, she is there again waiting for me. It is crazy because the only time she is not with me is when I am sick. I hate her during my sickness because of her absence.

Now, she is inviting me at 115AM…she is so dedicated during this period of no ailment. So much have been said about her. I cannot wait to have a private moment with her. Sorry folks, I cannot elaborate more about her. If you want to try, she is waiting always at your doorstep!

Our advice to our dear readers, always get the lesson learned from the story… avoid drugs and please stop or smoke moderately!
