Australia was the first country to announce May 6 as the start of the holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). It is the 9th month of Hijra or Islamic Calendar and it is considered as the holiest month in the Islamic Religion. Hijra calendar is based on lunar calendar, the timing of the month of Ramadan comes forward by approximately 10 to 12 days every year. This is the month where Muslims fast between dawn and sunset. During fasting, nothing must pass between their lips or mouth. As a sign of respect to our Muslim brothers and sisters who are fasting, non-Muslims are expected not to eat, drink or smoke in public places during fasting hours. They are free to do so at their homes and specific designated areas. Most countries having majority of Muslim population do impose such restrictions.
