My half day tour in Christchurch has just finished and I requested our tour guide to drop me off at Christchurch International Airport to catch my flight to Nadi, Fiji.
Fiji is an independent island country and located around 2,595 km north of New Zealand. Fiji’s official language are English, Fiji Hindi, Fijian and official currency is Fiji Dollar.
I received warm hospitality from Fiji Airways staff and I almost got drunk on board due to their unlimited red wine serving.
There are musicians playing guitars on the arrival hall that welcomes you to Fiji.
Tokatoka Resort is the hotel that I booked during my 2 day stay in Fiji. It’s just opposite the airport, so I just simply walk while pulling my luggage. Time to take my dinner and let us try their traditional food made of fish with coconut milk and veggies.
Let’s go for my Suva Full-Day Sightseeing Tour from Nadi. Although Suva is the capital of Fiji, but the main international airport is located at Nadi. The distance between Nadi to Suva is 195 km and it will take around 3 to 4 hours drive. Our tour guide is explaining the rich colonial history of Fiji while enjoying the scenic coastal view of the island.
I am surprised why Fijian men are wearing skirt instead of jeans. 38% of Fiji’s population were from Indian descent due to the indentured labourer imported from India to work on Fiji sugarcane industry between 1879 to 1916.
We stopped by at Tappoo City, Suva to take our lunch and I ordered the traditional Fish and Chips. Tappoo City is a six storey building and the biggest shopping mall in Fiji.
After lunch, our guide gave us free time to explore the city by our own. I decided to stroll around the city, it is safe to walk alone but extra precaution should be exercised.
Ratu Sukana Park is named after the founder of Fiji, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna. It is a public park located in Suva City Centre and there is waterfront and harbour. The temperature is little bit humid due to the island is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.
The statue of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna is located in front of Government Buildings, Suva. Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna is Fijian statesman, soldier, paramount chief and leader of men. He played important role in the pre-independence of Fiji. Unfortunately, he did not see Fiji gained independence in 1970 from Britain because he died earlier on May 30, 1958. Fiji was a British Crown Colony from 1874 till 1970.
Suva Botanical Garden was renamed as Thurston Garden to honour the 5th Governor of Fiji, Sir John Bates Thurston. The garden was the original site of Suva Town but was burned in 1843.
Fiji Museum is located inside Thurston Gardens holds remarkable collections. Some of its collection are Fiji’s indigenous boats, houses, clothes, etc. Museum entry fee is FJ$7 for adults and FJ$5 for children, currently online booking is not available. Museum is open Monday to Saturday and closed during Sunday.
Grand Pacific Hotel is a 4-star hotel located in Victoria Parade, Suva, Fiji. The hotel has an excellent ocean view, but it has only two floors.
While returning to Nadi, we passed by to Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort located in Fiji’s Coral Coast, Sigatoka. It is a 5-star hotel with the size 16 hectares featuring Fijian Bungalows. Perfect for those nature lovers who wants to escape from city life.
On my second day, I just roamed around Tokatoka Resort. Swim on their outdoor pool, eat my continental breakfast and packed my things. They even gave me complimentary drop off at the airport.
Thanks to loungekey for my free airport lounge access, even in the middle of the Pacific Ocean it is acceptable. That’s the end of my visit here in Fiji, see you on My Travel Diary Webseries Part 7
